Halloween Safety Tips for Drivers

Halloween brings costumes, parties, and trick-or-treating to neighborhoods throughout Columbus, Ohio. It also means more people are out walking after dark, including young children who may be excited, distracted, or difficult for drivers to see.

A little extra caution behind the wheel can go a long way on Halloween night. The following safety tips can help drivers navigate busy neighborhoods and reduce the risk of a serious accident.

Slow Down in Residential Neighborhoods

Expect more pedestrians than usual on Halloween, especially in residential areas where families are trick-or-treating. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends slowing down and continually scanning the road for pedestrians.

Children can be unpredictable around traffic. An excited trick-or-treater might suddenly step into the street or cross somewhere other than an intersection. Slowing down gives you more time to spot someone in your path and react safely.

Watch Carefully for Pedestrians

Pay close attention near crosswalks, intersections, sidewalks, driveways, and parked cars. Dark costumes can make pedestrians harder to see at night, while masks may limit a child’s ability to see approaching vehicles.

Ohio law also establishes specific responsibilities for drivers around pedestrians. Motorists must yield to pedestrians on sidewalks. Drivers must also yield, slowing or stopping when necessary, to certain pedestrians crossing within crosswalks when traffic signals do not otherwise assign the right of way.

Even when someone crosses outside a crosswalk, Ohio law does not relieve drivers of their responsibility to exercise due care to avoid a collision.

Put Away Distractions

Halloween is an especially important night to keep your attention on the road. Glancing down at a text or changing a playlist can be enough to miss a child stepping out from between parked cars.

Make things easier on yourself before you leave. Enter your destination into your navigation system, choose your music, and put your phone somewhere it will not tempt you to look away from the road.

Be Extra Careful Around Driveways

Pulling into or backing out of a driveway requires extra attention when trick-or-treaters are nearby. Children may be walking along sidewalks, crossing driveways, or moving quickly between houses.

Do not depend entirely on mirrors or a backup camera. Look around your vehicle before moving and continue checking your surroundings as you back up.

Never Drive After Drinking

For many adults, Halloween celebrations include parties where alcohol is served. Unfortunately, that can also mean impaired drivers on the road.

If you plan to drink, decide how you will get home before the festivities begin. Choose a designated sober driver, call a taxi or rideshare service, or make other arrangements that keep you from getting behind the wheel and causing a DUI accident.

Take Your Time After Dark

Reduced visibility creates another challenge for Halloween drivers. Before heading out, make sure your headlights are working properly and your windshield is clean.

Keep an eye out for people wearing dark costumes or walking in poorly lit areas. Most importantly, give yourself time to get where you are going. Leaving a few minutes earlier can make it easier to slow down, stay patient, and safely navigate Columbus neighborhoods.
