Motorcycle Safety

Representing riders in West Virginia and Ohio

The motorcycle accident attorney at Mani Ellis & Layne, PLLC know that motorcyclists are usually safe and responsible on the roads. We know this for a fact because we have represented many motorcyclists who were hurt in an accident caused by the negligence of another driver.

Motorcyclists are very vulnerable when riding, as they have little protection in a crash. Helmets are not required by law for most riders in Ohio, but are recommended. There are simple steps all motorcyclists can take to reduce the risk of a motorcycle accident and stay safe on the road:

Use protective gear - By law, motorcyclists must wear a helmet in West Virginia, as well as eye protection. But there are other steps you can take, too. Use full-fingered leather gloves. Wear motorcycle boots that have good ankle and foot support. Wearing leather or denim can provide some protection from road rash if you are in accident.

Keep your bike maintained - A well-maintained bike can help keep you safe on the road. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for changing the oil and brake pads. Monitor your tire pressure regularly. Check fluid levels and chain tension often.

Be mindful of blind spots - An accident can easily happen when a motorcyclist is in a driver's blind spot. The driver has a responsibility to look for motorcyclists, but it's safer to assume the driver can't see you.

Adjust to conditions - Slow down and use extra care when it's raining or especially windy, or there is road construction.

Be aware of your own condition - It's never a good idea to ride if you are fatigued or under the influence of drugs or alcohol. To make safe decisions and have good judgment, you need to be sober and alert.

Use extra caution at intersections - Intersections are dangerous for motorcyclists as cars often fail to yield the right of way. Be alert and prepared to stop.

Take a motorcycle safety course - Even experienced riders can build on their skills and learn new safety tips. The West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles and Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles have more information on signing up for safety courses.
