Shocking Statistics

Did you know accidents are the leading cause of death for persons under 44 years of age? In West Virginia, we see a shocking number of work related accidents, leading to serious or catastrophic injuries and the tragic loss of life. In 2013, the state had 60 worker deaths – 24 of which were transportation accidents -a radical increase from the earlier year. Contact with objects and equipment led to the death of 15 workers and fires and explosions resulted in 7 deaths. Accidental deaths that were not work related were also high and the state has the highest rate of accidental drug overdoses in the nation, with deaths now outstripping vehicle accidents. We also had 318 fatal car accidents in 2012, leading to 339 deaths. West Virginia has the second highest rate of fatal vehicle accidents per capita in the nation.
