Feds plan to study large truck accidents

West Virginia truck accident attorney

Truck crashes can lead to devastating injuries and loss of life due to the massive size of the vehicles involved. More than 15 years ago, a large-scale study found the vast majority of crashes were associated with a driver’s action or inaction.

Technology has evolved at a rapid pace since that study by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). According to FreightWaves, “many changes in technology, vehicle safety, driver behavior, and roadway design have occurred that affect how a driver performs.”

The FMCSA announced plans for a new study of how truck accidents happen. The study will take into account factors that had little to no impact 15 years ago. They include:

  • In-cab navigation
  • Fleet management systems
  • Automatic emergency braking systems
  • Texting and cellphone distractions

The study could help reverse an alarming trend. FreightWaves reports that crashes involving large trucks have steadily increased since the previous study.

Do truck driver assistance systems prevent crashes?

A big part of the study involves looking at the effectiveness of driver-assistance systems, which are becoming more common.

The FMCSA, according to the summary by FreightWaves, will develop a baseline of truck accident factors. The agency wants to identify factors that contribute to crashes involving injuries or deaths. The goal is to create strategies to prevent future crashes.

The FMCSA has posted a formal proposal and is seeking information on the best way to design and conduct the study.

Types of truck accidents in West Virginia

Crashes involving coal trucks, logging, and agricultural trucks are not unusual in West Virginia. As experienced truck accident lawyers, we applaud efforts to determine what causes crashes. These studies can ultimately lead to safer roads and highways.

Victims of truck crashes and families who lost loved ones often face a difficult ordeal after the accident. The insurance company representing the trucking business may downplay injuries and the long-term impact of the crash. The personal injury lawyers at Mani Ellis & Layne, PLCC have seen the devastating impact of serious crashes on victims, and know how the insurance companies can put profits above the well-being of people.

With so much at stake, it’s critical to talk to an experienced truck accident attorney as soon as possible. Don’t talk to the insurance company or trucking company. Anything you say will be used against you.
