Attorney Bernie Layne President of WV Association for Justice

Mani Ellis & Layne, PLLC is proud to announce that one of our firm's partners - Attorney Bernie Layne - was recently elected President of the West Virginia Association for Justice (WVAJ) at the organization's annual convention in Charleston earlier this June.

A West Virginia native originally from Williamson and raised in Parkersburg, Attorney Layne has been a lifelong advocate for helping others. The son of a sportswriter with the Williamson Daily News, he was raised with a competitive spirit and a fierce, unrelenting work ethic. Layne attended the University of Charleston on a baseball scholarship, but a torn rotator cuff soon ended his dreams of playing professionally. After surgery, he intensified his efforts in the classroom, was elected student body president, and earned a statewide public policy law award for his senior thesis on the corrupt and illegal strip mining practices in West Virginia. He received the Ivor S. Boiarsky Award for being the top political science student in his graduating class and was chosen to deliver the commencement address at graduation.

Attorney Layne received his M.A. in Sociology from Ohio University and worked with the Title 19 Medicaid Waiver program in southern West Virginia. It was during his time spent assisting the elderly and catastrophically injured workers that Layne realized the profound legal barriers this demographic faced. His efforts advocating on behalf of the disenfranchised prompted him to attend law school, and he earned his Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from the University of Dayton College of Law in 1999 before returning to West Virginia to begin his legal practice.

Attorney Layne, who has been a partner with Mani Ellis & Layne, PLLC since 2007, has been an active member on the WVAJ Board of Governors for more than a decade, was recipient of the WVAJ's distinguished service award in 2005, and was named to the organization's executive committee in 2006. As testament to the competitive spirit and work ethic instilled upon him by his parents, Attorney Layne is one of the youngest presidents in the association's history.

Having dedicated his professional career and personal life to fighting on behalf of injured victims and their families, Attorney Layne shares the same passion for victims' rights as each West Virginia personal injury lawyer at our firm. Throughout his years of practice, he has focused on representing injured workers and families who have suffered tragic losses at the hands of corporate negligence. His work includes representing injured plant workers and pipe fitters against asbestos manufacturers that continued to use unsafe products after learning of its carcinogenic properties. Attorney Layne has also been a bold advocate for injured miners, permanently disabled workers, victims and families of wrongful death, and patients injured by medical negligence and dangerous medical products, among numerous others.

A lawyer who does not shy away from the challenge and who thrives where others fail or are unwilling to try, Attorney Layne leaves nothing behind when fighting to provide the average individual, the families, the consumers, and the workers with a prominent voice to speak out against the injustices of corporate greed and misconduct. Layne's new role as President of WVAJ is sure to aid the local and legal communities immensely - as it has been clear that his experience, talent, and determination have proven instrumental in our firm's continual record of success. If you are in need of proven, passionate West Virginia personal injury lawyers, look no further than Mani Ellis & Layne, PLLC.
